Archbishop Cordileone and Nancy Pelosi

Some of you have seen that Archbishop Cordileone of San Francisco has barred Nancy Pelosi from receiving Holy Communion until she publicly repudiates her support for abortion. The full-text of his letter to her is charitable, clear, and to the point. My personal concern is people on both sides of the political aisle will interpret this action politically. We Christians must resist, as much as possible, seeing everything politically. A far superior lens through which to see reality is a spiritual lens, which is a seeing that far transcends that of politics. This situation is not about politics; rather it’s about a decision of a courageous bishop who is taking his pastoral duty seriously to care for a very public member of his flock and prevent grave scandal to the rest of the Church. Given the careful reasoning of the Archbishop above, I fully support his pastoral judgment and decision here.

Welcome Kim Kaye, Our New Parish Engagement Coordinator!

I’m pleased to announce that we’ve hired Kim Kaye as our new full-time Parish Engagement Coordinator!

Very highly regarded by her colleagues, Kim is a seasoned parish minister who brings sound pastoral wisdom and many gifts to the parish. She is passionate about working with people and executing many pastoral initiatives to bring people the love of Jesus. Here is a note from Kim:

The week of June 12th I will join the pastor’s discipleship team as the Engagement Coordinator for St Patrick.  I come from St. William in Walled Lake where I was the Pastoral Associate and Director of Religious Education for the parish. I happily enjoyed an office in the school and rectory and found pure happiness with the families I served.

I was formerly at St John the Baptist in Howell/Hartland as the Director of Faith Formation. I realized how much I loved ministry during the lockdown. We celebrated the sacraments with the children, the elect and candidates and served families with funerals and adoration to strengthen them during the pandemic. I realize the precious bond we shared in Christ and how important our faith community is for all ages. The love, fellowship and concern during this stressful time, opened my eyes to the powerful reality of the Church and how we can serve each other.

As a young mother, I volunteered at my local parish while my children were in formation. Over many years, I felt strongly guided by the Holy Spirit to seek formation in lay ministry. It was a constant and gentle push that opened an amazing door of spiritual growth and great friendships. I am humbled and amazed at the Lord’s guidance on this journey.

I am a Lay Ecclesial Minister with formation in theology at Sacred Heart Major Seminary.  I was blessed to also complete the Master Catechist formation at SHMS (RCIA and DRE certification).  I hold an MA (secondary education) with teacher certification and over the past few years, I was able to train in Florida for Catechist of the Good Shepherd with the National Director of CGS USA, Mary Mirrione. I was the atrium director at St. John.

My love for the Church has been life-long although it took me well into my adulthood to fall in love with the Eucharist, which happened when I started to commit to adoration as a catechist. It is with great JOY that I hope to serve the parish and journey to a deeper connection with the Trinity. (CCC 1396-1398)

I have been a parishioner here at St Patrick’s since the year the “new” school was opened in 2006. I am a widow, a mother of three adult children and a grandmother. I also enjoy my huge extended family in Howell, Hartland, South Lyon and Milford.  While raising my family and prior to full time ministry, I managed a small business with my husband.  The company specialized in aerial cinematography for nationwide production work in TV, movies and commercial footage. We had years of experience in Audio/Video production for the auto industry. As a family, we traveled extensively and enjoyed many adventures on location.

As mentioned a while back, Kim’s position is brand-new and will be focused on administrative support for key retreats, conferences, coordination and training of parish volunteers for Christian service initiatives and community outreach. Her new position is part of the new pastoral strategy we will be unveiling this summer and fall. She starts on June 13th. Please welcome Kim when you see her!

Parish Pentecost Prayer Service: June 4th at 7:30pm

Like so many of these I’ve seen hosted in the past, it’s going to be powerful night in which people will know the power of God’s love and peace in a new way. Plan on bringing your friends whom you want to know the love of God. (This prayer service will happen after the 5pm Mass)

Your servant in the Lord,
Fr. Mathias
